Derby County keen on out of contract Sheffield Wednesday man

Derby County are interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday’s departing goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has reported on his Patreon.

Sheffield Wednesday did offer Wildsmith a new contract at Hillsborough with his current deal up this summer.

However, the shot-stopper elected to turn down the offer in favour of a new start elsewhere. Now, it has been claimed that the goalkeeper is drawing interest from Sheffield Wednesday’s League One rivals Derby County.

Trusted reporter Nixon has stated on his Patreon that the Rams are keen on Wildsmith as he heads for free agency.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding Derby County’s ownership situation appears not to be completely stopping the club from identifying transfer targets for when they can actually make concrete moves for new players. A new ‘keeper is needed too, with Ryan Allsop heading for Cardiff City and Kelle Roos leaving to join Aberdeen.

A new start for Wildsmith…

Wildsmith has spent his entire career to date on the books at Sheffield Wednesday.

Spells away from Hillsborough on loan saw him pick up first-team game time with the likes of Alfreton Town and Barnsley. He also played 89 times for the Owls’ senior side, keeping 27 clean sheets. He has spent time serving as a number two at Hillsborough as well, and that was certainly the case last season as he played only eight times across all competitions.

A move this summer presents him with the chance to start afresh and search for regular game time.

If a switch to Derby County materialises, he could get just that. The Rams’ limited options could open the door for him to nail down a starting spot for the 2022/23 campaign.
