Wolves, Crystal Palace among sides keen on Swansea City star

Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes is drawing interest from Wolves, Crystal Palace and Southampton, Wales Online has said.

Swansea City’s move to bring Downes to South Wales last summer has proven to be a great bit of business.

He has cemented himself as a key player at the Swansea.com Stadium, playing over 3,000 minutes of football across all competitions. He featured 39 times, chipping in with one goal and two assists while striking up an impressive midfield partnership with Matt Grimes.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed either.

Leeds United were mentioned as an interested party earlier this year, as per Wales Online, Premier League trio Wolves, Crystal Palace and Southampton have all ‘shown an interest’ in the Brentwood-born star.

The Elland Road outfit have not made any contact over a move for Downes as it stands, Wales Online’s report states. However, the newly-linked trio have all made ‘tentative enquiries’ about the former Ipswich Town talent.

A key cog in Martin’s system…

Downes is arguably one of the most important players in Russell Martin’s Swansea City side.

His combative style of play sees him play a key role in protecting the back three when out of possession. When the Swans are on the ball, Downes is at the centre of it more often than not. He averaged 77.3 touches per game last season and a 93% pass success rate, making him pivotal in Martin’s possession-based setup (stats via SofaScore).

At 23, he has plenty of time to develop and flourish in South Wales and he still has three years remaining on his contract with the club.

There’s no doubt that Swansea City will be determined to fend off interest in Downes this summer. He looks as though he could be a vital player for the club in years to come, but with Premier League sides lurking, the Swans may well see their resolve over the midfielder tested.
