Subject of Sheffield United’s mystery seven-figure bid emerges in fresh report

Sheffield United’s mystery seven-figure bid was for Blackburn Rovers transfer target Anel Ahmedhodzic, Yorkshire Live has revealed.

It was reported earlier this month that Sheffield United had made a seven-figure bid for an unnamed player.

Said player was claimed to be a key target for the Blades but the situation regarding his current contract meant the Championship club have been keenly waiting for further developments as they look to strike an agreement.

Now, Yorkshire Live have said the mystery player is Bosnian international Ahmedhodzic.

The 23-year-old is currently contracted to Swedish giants Malmo but he spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan in France with Bordeaux. An option to buy was also included in said loan, but they are yet to trigger the clause.

Ahmedhodzic has also been mentioned as a target for the Blades’ Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Sheffield United target Ahmedhodzic worked under new Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson at Malmo.

A problem area…

It makes sense that the key target Sheffield United have made a seven-figure bid for is a centre-back.

Heckingbottom needs to bolster his options at the heart of defence before embarking on the 2022/23 campaign. Jack Robinson, Chris Basham and long-term absentee Jack O’Connell are currently the only natural centre-backs on the books at Bramall Lane now that Ben Davies and Filip Uremovic have seen their loans expire.

Ahmedhodzic could be an exciting target too. At 23, he has plenty of time to develop further and already has experience of playing at a high level. Along with half a season in Ligue 1, the 18-time Bosnian international has played Champions League football with Malmo.
