Frontrunner and price tag revealed as Southampton, Crystal Palace and Wolves battle to sign Championship midfielder

Southampton are ‘in the driving seat’ to sign Swansea City’s Flynn Downes this summer, reports Swansea Independent.

Reports this morning revealed that Downes, 23, has interest from all of Southampton, Crystal Palace and Wolves.

The midfielder signed for Swansea City from Ipswich Town just last summer. He thoroughly impressed in his 37 league appearances for the Swans, eventually becoming a target of Leeds United.

Their interest seems to have cooled. But Downes now has new Premier League suitors in Southampton, Crystal Palace and Wolves.

And an emerging report from Swansea Independent says that the Saints are in the driving seat to sign Downes this summer, and that the Swans may reluctantly accept an offer in the region of £6million for Downes.

Russell Martin rates Downes highly and sees him as a big part of their future, as per Swansea Independent’s report, and they would also owe Ipswich Town a decent sum of a potential sale of Downes.

A risky summer for the Swans…

Swansea City don’t have much spending money this summer. They don’t have much in the way of wages either, which was detailed in their pursuit of Joe Allen.

But selling the likes of Downes and maybe Joel Piroe may give Swansea and Martin some much-needed funding going forward.

There might be a risk going into the new season though if the Swans do sell their best players though – they only finished in 15th last season, and losing the likes of Downes and potentially Piroe could see them really struggle next time round.

It’s certainly a positive that Swansea have players who are wanted in the Premier League, but it’s not ideal timing for the Welsh club.

As for Downes, a move to any of Southampton, Palace or Wolves would be a hugely exciting oppurtunity, but the Saints are the most keen and they’ve got a record of buying in from the Championship, so it’s certainly a move that seems realistic.
