Watford ready to battle Middlesbrough for Premier League loan deal

Watford have joined the race to sign Southampton forward Adam Armstrong on loan, a report from The Sun has said.

Watford are gearing up for a new campaign under new management and Rob Edwards will be keen to make his mark on the squad.

He will surely be keen to get as much business done before the new season as possible, and it seems one man who is on his radar is Southampton forward Armstrong.

The Sun states that the Hornets are among those interested in signing the former Blackburn Rovers star on loan ahead of the 2021/22 season. Middlesbrough have also been linked this summer and the report from The Sun reiterates their interest as both sides bid to convince the forward to come back down to the Championship on a temporary basis.

It comes after a difficult first season with Southampton for Armstrong. He started promisingly with a debut goal against Everton but would only manage two goals and three assists in 28 outings across all competitions overall.

Best for Armstrong?

Game time was limited for the 25-year-old attacker over the second half of the season, remaining on the bench for much of 2022 so far.

There’s no doubt about his quality at Championship level. He previously starred on the books with Blackburn Rovers and his move up to the Premier League was fully deserved. However, after a challenging time at St. Mary’s, a temporary return to the second-tier with either Watford or Middlesbrough could be best.

His development could be hindered if his game time with Southampton remains limited and a drop back down to the Championship could give him some confidence after a tough patch.
