Middlesbrough set to swoop and snap up departing Sheffield United star

According to a report from The Sun’s Gary Stonehouse, Championship side Middlesbrough are set to snap up free agent striker David McGoldrick.

34-year-old McGoldrick is coming to the end of his current deal at Sheffield United. The Blades had said that they would not be renewing his contract.

With no extended deal, it means that the veteran frontman would be a free agent. But it appears that won’t be for long with Boro interested in bringing him on board.

The Sun’s Stonehouse writes that Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder ‘is looking to reunite with the Republic of Ireland international.

This would bring the pair back together after their time shared at Bramall Lane.

From the Blades to the Boro

Nottingham-born McGoldrick came through the ranks at Notts County before a free transfer to Southampton in 2005. He spent four years with the Saints before a £1million move to hometown club Nottingham Forest in 2009.

After four years with Forest, the silky forward made a move to Ipswich Town after four years. It was from there that Sheffield United picked him up in July 2018. His time with the Blades has seen the 34-year-old make 136 appearances, scoring 30 goals and adding 12 assists.

Last season was an underwhelming one for McGoldrick though. He scored just two goals and provided four assists in 19 Championship appearances.

Middlesbrough and Wilder are in the midst of a restructure and it appears that the evergreen McGoldrick is a part of these plans.

A Riverside fit?

Under Wilder, Middlesbrough were an outfit transformed. He turned the Teessiders around and mounted a charge for the play-offs. However, it was a charge that fell just short – a last-day defeat meaning that they ended last season in 7th place in the table.

Of course, it’s always going to be a risk taking on an aging player such as McGoldrick.

His composure on the ball and silky footwork will mean he remains a danger for Championship defences, though he will surely want to improve his goal tally if a move materialises.
