Stoke City star rejects new deal in favour of summer departure

Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen will leave the club this summer after rejecting a new contract, it has been reported by John Percy.

Stoke City have already been busy in the transfer market this summer.

A number of senior players have moved on at the end of their contracts while Josh Laurent, Aden Flint and Harry Clarke (loan) have all made their way through the doors in Staffordshire. Now though, it has been reported that one heading for the exit door is long-serving midfielder Allen.

According to Daily Telegraph reporter Percy, Allen will be heading for free agency.

He has turned down the offer of a new contract with Stoke City and will instead search for a new club as a free agent.

Swansea City have already been widely reported as an option for the Welshman, and Percy’s update states that the 32-year-old’s former club remains a possible option as his hunt for a new home begins.

The next chapter…

Carmarthen-born Allen has spent the last six years of his career on the books with Stoke City.

Over the course of his time with the Potters, Allen chipped in with 20 goals and 19 assists in 220 games across all competitions, also becoming the club’s captain. But now, the start of a new chapter awaits after he opted to turn down a new deal with the Championship club.

His experience and leadership will make him a worthwhile addition to any dressing room, as will his passing ability, energy and tenacity.

There’s no doubt that a return to Swansea City would make for a romantic reunion, but it remains to be seen how his situation pans out as his time at Stoke City draws to a close.
