Portsmouth nearing loan deal for West Brom ace

Portsmouth are ‘very close’ to recruiting West Brom shot-stopper Josh Griffiths on loan, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has said.

Portsmouth are in need of a new number one this summer.

Gavin Bazunu starred on loan at Fratton Park last season but his return to parent club Manchester City and eventual permanent move to Southampton means Pompey need a new goalkeeper ahead of the new season.

Now, it has been claimed that Danny Cowley is closing in on a new man in between the sticks.

TalkSPORT reporter Crook has claimed that West Brom’s talented ‘keeper Griffiths is ‘very close’ to joining Portsmouth.

The 20-year-old has been linked with the League One side already this summer and now, it seems a temporary move is on the cards.

A good deal for all?

Griffiths doesn’t look like he’ll be pushing for the number one shirt at West Brom just yet, with David Button and Alex Palmer currently the options in between the sticks back at The Hawthorns.

With that in mind, another temporary exit seems the best move.

The shot-stopper struggled to impress with Lincoln City last season but previously starred while with Cheltenham Town. He kept a thoroughly impressive 23 clean sheets and only conceded 45 times in 50 outings for the Robins and also has five clean sheets in six appearances for West Brom’s U23s.

Portsmouth have already proven that they can be trusted with talent goalkeepers. The earlier mentioned Bazunu is the perfect example of that, and West Brom will hope that Griffiths can enjoy a similarly successful spell should he make the temporary switch to Fratton Park ahead of the new campaign.
