Middlesbrough announce third summer signing with arrival of Blackburn Rovers man

Middlesbrough have announced the arrival of Blackburn Rovers centre-back Darragh Lenihan on a four-year deal.

Middlesbrough have signed three players in as many days, with Lenihan joining goalkeeper Liam Roberts and left-sided player Ryan Giles as new signings on Teesside.

Lenihan has been at Blackburn Rovers for 10 years having signed from Dublin-based side Belvedere back in 2012. Since then he has gone on to make over 250 appearances in all competitions, captaining the club in the most recent campaign.

It came as a surprise to many that the 28-year-old was to leave Ewood Park at the end of his contract, with him now joined Boro on free transfer.

The three-time Republic of Ireland international signs on a long term deal, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026.

He will provide vital competition in Middlesbrough’s back three, fighting for a place alongside the likes of Paddy McNair, Dael Fry, Anfernee Dijksteel, and Grant Hall.

What qualities can Lenihan bring to Boro’s back line?

The most important quality is his leadership. Wilder has spoken openly about the lack of leaders in the dressing room, and with Lenihan’s recent stint as Blackburn Rovers captain, it is a role that he could fulfil at the Riverside as early as next season if the manager sees fit.

He is strong in the air and battles hard and will be a strong asset to any side, and Middlesbrough will reap the benefits over the other sides linked.

Who else was interested in signing Lenihan?

Along with Middlesbrough, there was interest from West Bromwich Albion, whilst Blackburn Rovers’ bitter rivals Burnley were also reportedly keen.
