Middlesbrough and West Brom-linked striker won’t push for PL exit

Middlesbrough and West Brom are both tracking Newcastle United man Dwight Gayle ahead of a potential move, but the striker won’t be pushing for the exit door according to The Star.

Middlesbrough had a plethora of strikers at their disposal last season. Loanees Andraz Sporar, Folarin Balogun, and Aaron Connolly joined Duncan Watmore and Josh Coburn in the ranks, yet with the trio of loan players returning to their parent clubs, Chris Wilder’s side are looking for replacements.

West Brom have allowed Andy Carroll to depart already this summer and so are in the market for a new forward to lead the line.

Both sides have identified Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle as a potential new recruit, with the 32-year-old’s future hanging by a thread at St James Park.

Last season Gayle was limited to just eight first-team appearances in the Premier League, all of which were from the subs bench. Out of those eight games, he played over 10 minutes on just one occasion.

He is down the pecking order behind the likes of Callum Wilson, Chris Wood, and Allan Saint-Maximin, and so would be excused if he was pushing for a move away from the Magpies.

However, according to a report from The Star, Gayle is not agitating for a Premier League departure, instead weighing up his options before deciding on his immediate future.

He still has one year remaining on his contract at Newcastle United and so Eddie Howe’s side could be prepared to cash in if the right offer came along, instead of losing the striker for free next summer.
