Presenting the inside scoop on the latest Football League news

Departing QPR favourite Charlie Austin undergoes medical with potential new club

Charlie Austin has undergone a medical with Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar ahead of his QPR contract expiry, reports Football Insider.

Austin, 32, sees his QPR contract expire at the end of this month. The Englishman returned to the R’s on a permanent basis last summer but struggled for form last time round, netting just five times in 34 league appearances.

There was some confusion over his contract as many were led to believe that he was contacted at the club until the summer of 2023, before QPR clarified the matter, and confirmed that the striker was set to be released at the end of this month.

Reading were linked with a potential move for Austin earlier this month. Soon after, links to Brisbane Roar emerged and now, Football Insider say that the Australian club have won the race to sign Austin.

Pastures new…

Austin has enjoyed a solid career in the English game. He’s scored goals wherever he’s played at and at 32 years old, he’ll surely still have a few years left ahead of him.

And a move to the Australian league is a hugely exciting one for him. Brisbane Roar struggled last time round but they’ll be hoping that Austin can fire them up the league table next time round.

Austin’s experience in the English game and natural finishing ability will surely come in handy over in Australia and if he can deliver to Brisbane fans what he has done for QPR fans, then he’ll become a favourite in no time.
