3 players Sheffield Wednesday must tie down to new deals sooner rather than later

Sheffield Wednesday have a host of key players onboard that Darren Moore and co will surely be hoping to keep for the long term.

The Owls’ failure to win promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking means they are preparing for another season of League One football.

New signings will be important but Sheffield Wednesday must also look at their current crop of players and their current deals.

With that in mind, here are three players Sheffield Wednesday need to tie down to new contracts sooner rather than later…

Barry Bannan

Star midfielder Bannan is a pretty obvious first name on the list.

He has already pledged his commitment to another promotion push with Sheffield Wednesday but, as it stands, his current deal is up in 2023. If the Owls are to keep him on board beyond next summer, the club will need to tie him down to a fresh contract.

Regardless of whether or not Sheffield Wednesday win promotion in the 2022/23 campaign, you’d fancy Bannan to attract interest next summer, especially if he’s out of contract.

Josh Windass

Windass is another out of contract next summer and another that Moore will surely want to keep.

Recent interest from Atletico Talleres shows the forward will attract interest from elsewhere and a fresh contract would certainly help fend off further attention from elsewhere.

Although injury disrupted his involvement last season, Windass could prove to be vital at Hillsborough for years to come.

Lee Gregory

The experienced striker only joined on a two-year deal last summer and is another to have drawn interest from elsewhere.

Gregory proved last season that he is still a dangerous goalscorer but with a year remaining on his deal, he will be on his way at the end of this season as it stands. The offer of a new contract would surely see off potential suitors and could well give the c33-year-old the chance to see out the final years of his career in his home city.
