Newcastle United in advanced talks to sign Burnley star in cheap deal

Burnley’s star goalkeeper Nick Pope is closing in on a move to Newcastle United, The Telegraph has reported.

Burnley look as though they are poised to lose one of their star players in Pope.

The 30-year-old has long been one of the standout individuals at Turf Moor, with his performances helping him become a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squad. He has been consistently linked with a move away from Burnley too, but it seems after their relegation, a departure is finally on the cards.

There has already been interest this summer and now, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are closing in on a deal.

It is claimed advanced talks are taking place over a deal that will see Pope join the Magpies for between only £8m and £10m.

The Clarets are ready to offload Pope following their relegation and a switch to St. James’ Park would see him compete with Martin Dubravka for the spot in former Burnley boss Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

Time to move on…

After a successful six-year stay in Lancashire, it seems the time is right for Pope to head for pastures new.

Although there is the option for another 12 months, he is now in the final year of his current deal with Burnley and he’s certainly above Championship level, so a step back up to the Premier League seemed inevitable.

Newcastle United will be hoping to seal a deal to bring Pope to the north east while Burnley’s attention may well turn to finding a new number one should the towering shot-stopper’s switch go through.
