Comment: Preston North End should go all out to sign this linked wing-back

Ryan Lowe’s first full season is set to commence at Preston North End, with various rumours already circulating of players being linked with a move to Deepdale this transfer window.

With 13 players released at the end of the 2021/22 Championship season by Preston North End, Lowe will already have his eyes on some new fresh faces to bring into the building.

The budget of Preston North End may not be the biggest this window so Lowe will need to look at a few free agent signings to fill the squad after the departures of last season. There is now a positivity around the club with fans optimistic and exciting for what this new-look Preston North End will become at the start of the new season.

Since Lowe’s arrival, he has enforced his playing style which relies heavily on the wing-back positions to affect the game defensively and more ideally in an attacking sense.

Brad Potts was used as a right wing-back under Lowe last season, in which the attacking midfielder did a very sturdy job. But, there is room for improvement to be made at the right-wing back position. One that will be able to help in the quick transition from defending to attacking, which will no doubt help Lowe’s plans to implement his style more effectively.

One player that has been linked is ex-Fulham player Cyrus Christie. The Irish international was on loan at Swansea City for the remainder of the 2021/2022 season after his switch to the Welsh club in the January transfer window. Christie started every game for Swansea under Russell Martin as they looked to try and push their way higher up the league table.

Martin sets his team out in a 3-4-3 formation in which Christie was playing as a right wing-back. This then saw Christie being able to affect games more in the final third, therefore allowing Christie to pick up five assists and three goals throughout his time at the Swans.

Christie would fit Lowe’s idea of how he wants Preston North End to play perfectly. His high work-rate and effectiveness going forward he ticks all of the boxes that are needed in a right wing-back in this system. And with the Irish connections at the club already with Alan Browne and Sean Maguire amongst the ranks, potentially we could see Christie come into the fold and link up for club and country.
