Bristol City man rejects new deal in favour of Barnsley switch

Bristol City defender Robbie Cundy has turned down a new deal at Ashton Gate and will instead join Barnsley on a three-year deal, as per Bristol Live.

Bristol City man Cundy had to wait patiently for a chance in the senior side at Ashton Gate.

The former Oxford United youngster joined in 2019 from Bath City but had to wait until 2022 to make his first-team debut. He cemented a place in Nigel Pearson’s starting XI over the final months of the season and it was said that he was closing in on a new deal with the Robins.

Now though, Bristol Live has revealed that the 25-year-old has turned down a new contract in favour of a move elsewhere.

Cundy is now set to link up with League One side Barnsley. He is expected to sign a three-year deal with the Tykes, with a move on the verge of completion as the Bristol City man undergoes a medical at Oakwell.

A new challenge

Bristol Live’s report states new Barnsley boss Michael Duff has been aware of Cundy for some time, watching him during his spell with Bath City.

Now, it seems the centre-back will be embarking on a new challenge under the management of his long-term admirer.

Cundy’s string of promising performances towards the end of the campaign will be encouraging for Barnsley as they bid to wrap up a deal. He looks to have untapped potential and if he can maximise his growth, he could be one Bristol City regret losing in years to come.

Barnsley will be hoping there are no late obstacles in their bid to bring Cundy in as he moves closer to the Ashton Gate exit door.
