Vincent Kompany makes transfer revelation regarding Burnley’s ‘last resort’

Burnley’s new boss Vincent Kompany has said the loan market will be used as a “last resort” as he looks to recruit for the long-term at Turf Moor.

Burnley officially named Kompany as Sean Dyche’s full-time replacement earlier this month.

He arrives with a difficult task ahead of him as the Clarets return to Championship football. A whole host of key players will be moving on, presenting him with the challenge of recruiting suitable replacements ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Now, Kompany has dropped a strong hint on Burnley’s position on the loan market.

Speaking with Lancs Live, the Burnley boss said borrowing players from other clubs is a “last resort”, suggesting that the Clarets will only turn to loan players if they do not have the funds to buy a replacement or if they need an immediate signing.

He went on to stress he hopes to recruit for the long-term, saying:

“You borrow as a last resort.

“If you don’t have the funds available to bring in the quality that you want, if there’s a position where you have an immediate need to bring in a player to help you, so borrowing is something you do in the last resort.

“I think our main idea is to see if we can find players who are willing to stay longer at the Club to develop them as well because the budgets we’re in will not allow us to probably bring in the seasoned guys.

“Also, do we need to, we want to bring in players who are able to commit for a bit of a longer period to the Club and create and add value to the Club when other teams come to take them from us.”

Smart recruitment…

Bringing in players to develop for the future could prove to be a smart method for Kompany and the Clarets to use this summer.

They’ve previously had the pulling factor of Premier League football to attract more established, senior players in previous years. However now, turning their attention to players with higher ceilings could prove to be cheaper in the short-term and more profitable in the long-term.

It would certainly be a more sustainable method, but they will have to get it spot on with so many key players moving on this summer.

James Tarkowski and Ben Mee are among those departing, while Nick Pope, Maxwell Cornet and Dwight McNeil are already attracting interest.
