Swindon Town set to sign Middlesbrough youngster

According to a report by Football Insider, Swindon Town are set to sign Middlesbrough youngster Sol Brynn on loan for the upcoming season.

Boro boss Chris Wilder is set to allow the 21-year-old to leave after not being named in his first-team plans for the next campaign. The Robins have reportedly beaten a number of other Football League clubs to secure Brynn’s services for their League Two season.

The goalkeeper impressed last term during his loan spell with Scottish side Queen of the South, keeping seven clean sheets in 21 appearances before being recalled to compete for a starting spot in January.

However, Brynn failed to break into the first-team, instead making a number of appearances for Middlesbrough’s U23s in the Premier League 2.

Brynn is still yet to make a senior appearance for the Teessiders, with Joe Lumley and Luke Daniels favoured over him last season.

The 21-year-old has been training with the first-team since the 2019/20 season, making a number of appearances during pre-season campaigns but another loan spell could benefit Brynn’s development.

After Swindon Town narrowly missed out on promotion last season, the acquisition of such a well-regarded young talent could possibly bolster their chances of reaching the play-offs once again in the upcoming campaign.

A smart move for all?

The 21-year-old impressed during his time in Scotland, putting in a number of important and commanding performances to try and prevent the threat of relegation in the first half of Queen of The South’s underwhelming season.

Game-time at a competitive level of football with a side such as Swindon Town who could potentially compete at the top of the table may further his development to give Brynn an opportunity to finally break into the Boro first-team.

During his time with Sheffield United, Wilder gained a reputation for preferring the services of more experienced players, more game-time for Brynn could benefit him and possibly heighten his chances of becoming a regular starter for the Teesiders in the future.
