Sunderland hold transfer talks with PL duo

A recent report from Northern Echo claims that Sunderland have held transfer talks with both Tottenham Hotspur and Everton about a potential move to see both Jack Clarke and Nathan Broadhead return to the club next season.

The two young loanees spent last year on Wearside and were both played a part of the squad’s promotion back into the second tier.

Clarke, a former Leeds United winger, featured for Sunderland both at wing-back and on the wing and in his 17 League One appearances he contributed to four goals and at times showed class in big moments.

The 21-year-old provided the assist which saw Sunderland book a place in the play-off final and his performance in the second-leg against Sheffield Wednesday was incredibly promising.

Broadhead featured 20 times in the league for the Black Cats scoring ten times at crucial moments. The 24-year-old was unlucky with injuries and spent several months sidelined, but despite this when he was fit he was firing.

A risk?

On the face of it the return of both youngsters would be good signings as Sunderland look to build a squad capable of competing in the second tier, but there are some warning signs over both players.

Clarke is yet to consistently prove himself at this level and his time in the Championship so far in his career has left him 43 appearances and just six goal contributions.

He is only young, but Sunderland need a consistently good return and it’s yet to be proven Clarke can provide that.

Broadhead’s injury worries speak for themselves, but should Sunderland be able to keep him fit he will no doubt be a great player to have next time round.

With both players entering the final year of their current deals, a cheaper permanent move may be on the table, but don’t rule out another loan spell in the north east.
