Sheffield Wednesday rivalling League Two side for Premier League starlet

Sheffield Wednesday and Harrogate Town are both keen on Wolves’ young defender Lewis Richards, it has been claimed.

Sheffield Wednesday will be determined to bolster their defensive ranks this summer after enduring a shortage of options at the back during their 2021/22 campaign.

Ben Heneghan has already come through the door as a fresh centre-back option and now, Football League World have claimed another defender is on their radar.

Wolves’ versatile 20-year-old Richards is said to be on the Owls’ transfer shortlist. Harrogate Town are also claimed to be showing interest in the Irishman after bringing him in for the second half of last season.

The League One and League Two duo are both reported to be eyeing a loan deal, though it is said the Sulphurites hopes of a summer reunion with Richards have taken a blow due to Sheffield Wednesday’s interest.

A smart addition?

Harrogate Town will already know all about Richards and vice versa, so it wouldn’t take long for him to settle back in at Wetherby Road.

A step up to Sheffield Wednesday would see him take on a new challenge though, and he could be a clever signing for the Owls.

Richards’ versatility sees him operate as a centre-back, left-back or left wing-back. That could be of great value over the course of the League One season and especially if Darren Moore endures another shortage of options at the back.

With over 75 appearances to his name for Wolves at youth level, it seems the time has come for Richards to play consistent senior football.

Game time is vital for development at this stage in a young player’s career and a temporary switch to either Sheffield Wednesday or Harrogate Town could give Richards exactly that.
