Opinion: Blackburn Rovers should avoid signing emerging Championship target, Tomasson can do much better

Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell has emerged as a transfer target for new Blackburn Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The Sun revealed last week that Tomasson wants to bring in Cantwell on loan this summer.

Cantwell, 24, spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth where he featured 11 times in the Championship without recording any goal contributions.

It was a tough time for the Englishman, who’s endured a tough few years in truth. The early hype around his abilities has well and truly died down now and it looks as though Norwich City are open to letting him leave this summer, either on loan or permanently.

Tomasson’s Rovers…

Tomasson is the man in charge of Blackburn Rovers now. His appointment is something of a calculated risk from the Rovers board given his lack of experience in the English game, but his ability to play efficient and attractive football, as seen in his previous role at Malmo.

Fans are quietly optimistic for the future but Tomasson needs a big summer if he’s to have any chance of steering Rovers towards the top-six next season.

The club could well do with a creative midfielder to fill the void left by Joe Rothwell but Cantwell may not be the man to do that.

Sure, Cantwell has proven himself in the past. But he’s been out of form and seemingly low on confidence for a few years now and so for Rovers, it looks like it’d simply be a signing that bolsters the squad, rather than improves it.

In a summer where there’s some really talented players on the free and loan markets, Rovers and Tomasson should be setting their sites much higher.
