Burnley man agrees new contract, announcement expected this week

Burnley have agreed fresh terms with Jack Cork, reports The Athletic.

Cork, 32, is set to remain with Burnley going into the 2022/23 Championship season after agreeing fresh terms with the club.

The Athletic have revealed that the midfielder is set to stay on, with the announcement of his new deal expected this week.

The same report also states that Burnley had the option to extend Cork’s stay by a further year but that relegation from the Premier League meant that clause was no longer available.

Vincent Kompany is the man at the helm now and it may well be that Cork has finally decided to remain with the Clarets now that Kompany is at the helm, with the Belgian bound to help attract fresh blood to Turf Moor this summer.

But Burnley return to a strong Championship table, with Norwich City and Watford joining them from last season’s Premier League roster and all of Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United and Sunderland making the step up from League One.

A smart move?

Burnley need experience for their return to the Championship. The next season is going to be a really tough one for them, adapting back to the Football League and doing so under a new manager.

Cork gives Burnley that experience though. The Englishman has so far racked up 160 appearances for the Clarets (as a permanent player) in all competitions, including 20 in the Premier League last time round.

He’ll be an important payer for Kompany and in the Championship, Cork’s Premier League pedigree should shine through. All in all, this seems like a smart way to start the Kompany era.
