Burnley keen on Oxford United man

According to Alan Nixon, relegated Burnley are eyeing up a move for Oxford United’s Luke McNally.

Burnley suffered last-day heartache last season as they tumbled from the Premier League.

A 2-1 loss against Newcastle United was compounded by Leeds United beating Brentford 2-0. That sequence of results saw the Clarets relegated and facing Championship football this season.

Under new boss Vincent Kompany, the Turf Moor outfit are looking to restructure. And 22-year-old U’s defender McNally is said to be part of that restructure.

Burnley looking at McNally…

Republic of Ireland international McNally signed for Oxford United near the end of last year’s January transfer window.

He joined the club from Irish side St. Patrick’s Athletic – more commonly known as St. Pat’s.

Since arriving at the Kassam Stadium, youngster McNally has gone on to make 35 appearances for the U’s.

These all came last season in what was a breakout campaign for the young Irishman. 30 of those games – including four goals and an assist – came in League One.

That has obviously caught the eye and attention of Burnley who Nixon says are ready to offer a £1million-plus deal to land him.

Thoughts?

Burnley are going to need a strong defence for the Sky Bet Championship. It is a hard slog of a 46-game season and consistency is key.

They have already lost a defensive stalwart in James Tarkowski who has left Turf Moor after the expiration of his contract.

Fellow defender Nathan Collins is also highly courted and might not be with the Lancashire club come the start of next season.

Bringing in reinforcements will be a necessity for Kompany and Burnley. They obviously think highly enough of Luke McNally to consider splashing out a seven-figure amount to land him.
