Peterborough United negotiating free transfer exit for defender amid interest from four clubs

Peterborough United are in negotiations to cancel Mark Beevers’ contract, Barry Fry has revealed, with four clubs interested in recruiting the centre-back this summer.

Peterborough United’s relegation to League One will see some fresh faces come through the door while others head for pastures new, with Grant McCann keen to make his mark on the squad in his first window back in charge at London Road.

Midfielder Ben Thompson has already arrived, but one man who could be heading for the exit is centre-back Beevers.

The 32-year-old fell out of favour over the 2021/22 campaign and now, director of football Fry has told the Peterborough Telegraph that negotiations are ongoing with Beevers to cancel his deal by mutual consent.

Fry also revealed four clubs are showing an interest in the towering defender, saying:

“There have been four clubs interested in Mark, but he wants to do his own thing and we are currently negotiating with him on that.”

Beevers’ current deal with Peterborough United runs through until the summer of 2024 as it stands, but if an agreement can be reached to end his contract early, he will be free to negotiate with new clubs as a free agent.

The right decision for all?

Beevers’ experience at League One certainly could be of value for the Posh and he was a key player in their promotion-winning 2020/21 campaign under Darren Ferguson’s management.

However, he did struggle in the Championship and it seems he doesn’t have a place in McCann’s starting XI moving forward.

Letting him go for nothing when he has two years remaining on his deal will be a bit of a blow, but it frees space on Posh’s wage bill to bring in some fresh faces and opens a slot in the squad for another player to come in.

From Beevers’ perspective, a summer move will open the door for him to find regular football elsewhere too. And with four clubs interested, it certainly seems the defender isn’t short of options.
