West Brom could have an eye on Championship boss who is out of contract in the summer, reporter hints

The Athletic’s Steve Madeley has suggested that West Brom could have ‘an eye on any experienced manager’ this summer, with Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray mentioned.

West Brom are facing another managerial decision in the summer. Steve Bruce signed on an 18-month contract earlier in the year but he’s since split opinion among fans.

Yesterday, reports emerged revealing that the West Brom officials were set to discuss Bruce’s future in the summer, with the potential to replace him ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

On Twitter, one fan put the question to Madeley of whether or not former Baggies boss, and current Blackburn Rovers manager Mowbray might be an option – the 58-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has recently been linked with the Stoke City vacancy.

Writing on Twitter, this is what Madeley had to say when posed the question about Mowbray:

A former Baggies boss…

Mowbray spent time in charge of West Brom between 2006 and 2009. He oversaw 140 games as manager and won 57 of them, winning the Championship title in 2008 to take the club back into the Premier League.

But the Englishman would see West Brom relegated immediately, finishing 20th in the league before he left the club to take the Celtic job.

Baggies fans have fond memories of Mowbray but whether or not he’s the right man to come in, close to 15 years after leaving, remains debatable.

He’s done well with Blackburn Rovers but his side are rapidly slipping out of the top-six and many Rovers fan want to see a change in the summer.

Either way, Mowbray seemingly has options this summer with his Blackburn future up in the air, links to Stoke City and now suggestions that he could be on West Brom’s radar.

But Bruce remains the man in charge at The Hawthorns – his side face Birmingham City in their next Championship fixture.
