The Swans are closing in on a deal for Downes, who looks set to depart Portman Road this summer.

He was absent from Paul Cook’s matchday squad for Ipswich’s opening day clash with Morecambe. The League One promotion hopefuls played out a 2-2 draw, Rekeem Harper and Lee Evans starting as a midfield partnership.

A Matt Grimes replacement?

Swans skipper Matt Grimes has been heavily linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium this summer, leading to speculation about Downes being a potential replacement.

As a young, talented central midfielder, the Ipswich Town academy graduate certainly has the potential to be a replacement. He would have big shoes to fill if Grimes is to depart, with the midfielder starring for Swansea in recent seasons.

Downes’ career to date

Much of the youngster’s career has been spent in League One, but he does have a campaign of Championship football under his belt.

Despite his youth, Downes has already played 99 times for Ipswich, netting three goals and providing four assists In the process. The Brentwood-born ace also spent a short stint on loan with Luton Town in 2018.
