Reporter says ‘further doubt’ over Derby County takeover could scupper current plans but secret interest could be key

As takeovers go, Derby County’s is one stretching out into the realms of the protracted – almost to saga lengths.

It was back in mid-December that Morris and Derby announced a deal had been agreed ‘in principle’ with Derventio Holdings (UK).

That company is run by Sheikh Khaled Zayed Bin Saquer Zayed Al Nayhan – a member of the Bahraini royal family.

That was December – two months or so ago. It was an ‘in principle’ agreement that has borne nothing concrete – as of yet, that is.

From that point, nothing else seems to have emerged from the takeover. The only news that has come out are soundbites and snippets from those at Pride Park.

Manager Wayne Rooney gave a brief update eight days ago – it was an ambiguous update. He simply said in a pre-match presser: “As far as I am concerned there is nothing to update. Still working on getting it done.

Current owner Morris admits that the takeover is still ongoing, admitting so in a recent interview with the Daily Mail. On the issue of the takeover, Morris admits it is “not finished,” adding that a non-disclosure deal means that nothing can be said about proceedings.

Morris does continue to by saying that, “There’s a contract between the two of us” which would suggest that the deal is still a live one.

However, news today somewhat scotches that enthusiasm from Morris.

New doubt is cast as to whether there will be a successful takeover of the Rams with Derbyshire Live’s Steve Nicholson picking up on this via a Daily Mail article.

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel writes that there is “now significant doubt” that the protracted takeover will see completion and mentions the newly-unearthed fact that the same connections failed to complete previous bids for West Ham and Bournemouth last season.

Citing a “worrying lack of communication” with the group, Mokbel adds that issues in accessing the proven funds could be the hold-up that is “required to complete the takeover.

However, potential salvation could be just around the corner in a definite ‘silver lining’ moment.

Whilst a deal with the Bahraini group could be about to hit the buffers, new hope could be just around the corner.

Four days ago, The Sun reported that a delay in completion had brought interest from another party.

Reporter, Gary Stonehouse, let slip some snippets in an article that was mainly about the Rams interest in Plymouth striker Luke Jephcott.

He wrote then that there was a degree of interest from abroad and said of the Rams that “they emerged as a target for new American bidders.”

Stonehouse added that this interest came about after the frustrating delays in the proposed Arab takeover.” He also went on to add that contact had been made between the two parties: Derby and the potential suitors.

To that end, he wrote that the interested Americans “have looked around the Rams facilities in secret.”

Amidst all this new doubt and drawn-out affair with Sheikh Khaled Zayed Bin Saquer Zayed Al Nayhan’s group, could salvation for Derby County now rest in American hand and secret visits?
