Charlton Athletic have confirmed the signing of former Wigan Athletic and Watford midfielder Ben Watson on their official club website, bringing him in on a free transfer after his release from Nottingham Forest.
After confirming that Thomas Sandgaard’s takeover of the club had been complete, Charlton Athletic wasted no time in following up one announcement with another.
Experienced midfielder Ben Watson became the first signing of the new era at The Valley. Having been released by Nottingham Forest earlier this summer, Watson has been on the lookout for a new club since and has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Addicks.
The 35-year-old spoke to the club’s official website about his latest move, saying that he has been with the squad for the last few weeks expressing his delight that the deal has now been confirmed. He said:
“I’m delighted to be here. I’ve been with the group for a couple of weeks now, so I’m glad it’s finally done. I’m ready to play and I’m hoping to be involved on Sunday.
“I bring that experience into the training ground, I’ve played a lot of football in my time and I’m really looking forward to this season.”
Watson has bags of experience a Championship and Premier League level and will be hoping to use that to make an impact at Charlton Athletic.
Watson made his way into senior football after coming through Crystal Palace’s youth academy. He notched up 183 appearances for the Eagles before his departure in 2009.
Since then, Watson has gone on to play for Wigan Athletic, QPR, West Brom, Watford and Nottingham Forest.
