Eunan O’Kane signed for Leeds United from Bournemouth for a fee of around £450,000 on the August transfer window deadline day in 2016. However, it hasn’t been a marriage that has worked out perfectly for either party, especially after his horrific double leg break whilst on loan at Luton Town in 2018. He’s currently back there on loan from Leeds but his future is said to be uncertain by Wayne Veysey, writing in Football Insider.
After 118 appearances (six goals/11 assists) for Bournemouth, O’Kane’s move to Elland Road was viewed with a degree of enthusiasm. O’Kane was an established player with not only Championship but international pedigree with the Republic of Ireland.
However, as it became increasingly obvious that he was falling out of favour at Elland Road, a loan move to Luton Town saw him move away from Elland Road. He’d featured just four times for The Hatters before that mid-September injury which resulted in a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg in the game against Bristol Rovers.
Whilst he may be back on loan with Luton, O’Kane hasn’t played a competitive game of football in the 20 months since his injury. The whole situation has Veysey writing that the Leeds United loanee if facing “an uncertain future” which could be exacerbated with the Bedfordshire outfit resigning former manager Nathan Jones.
O’Kane was signed by Jones’ predecessor, Graeme Jones, this January on a loan deal that will run until next summer. A further complication could be that a ‘Leeds source’ has told Football Insider that, as Veysey writes, “there is no expectation of O’Kane returning to Elland Road during the remainder of his contract.”
Should that last rejoinder hold true, it appears that Leeds United are ready to cut their losses with the unfortunate Irishman.
