Leeds United captain Cooper comments as Whites return to training

Leeds United was an outfit ahead of the curve when it came to analysing the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the lockdown was approaching, they knew just what to do and quickly distributed exercise equipment to the players. Today marks the first day that the Whites have been allowed to train as a group at Thorp Arch – here’s what captain Liam Cooper had to say.

When asked by BBC Radio Leeds’ Adam Pope to talk about the return to Thorp Arch, the testing regime and so forth, Cooper was forthright and open in his replies.

On the topic of the testing itself, Cooper quite graphically said: “It’s horrible to be honest. Obviously, I didn’t expect it to be…well I was gagging when I had to stick the swab to the back of my throat. It’s not very nice but it’s only short.

When asked about whether both he and the players are happy to come back, Cooper was quick to respond with: “I’ve not heard of any concerns in our group. Obviously, I am only in contact with our group.

Cooper saved his strongest words until the very end of his interview with Popey. When asked about getting back to it properly, captain Cooper stated: “We are not the type of club who want anything passing to us. We want to go and accomplish it ourselves. Some may call us mad for that but, no, we want to do it properly and we want to go finish what we started. We’ve come a long way these last two years and it’d be fitting to get that done.

Leeds United, as a club, have always said that they want the season to start up again so they can win promotion properly. On the pitch, as it should be won.
