Former Swansea City captain opens up about his time at the Liberty Stadium

With football very much on hold across Europe, many footballers are using this time to open up about their time with championship clubs. Former Swansea City captain, Leroy Fer, has been speaking to the Konversations with Kenji podcast about his time in South Wales.

The 30-year-old who is currently plying his trade in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord spent three seasons at the Liberty Stadium. Following a successful loan spell, he signed permanently for The Swans at the start of the 2016/17 season. The central midfielder has spoken fondly about the three years he spent at Swansea.

“My time in England, I enjoyed my time with Swansea the most, it’s where I stayed the longest – three-and-a-half years.

I played with some good football players and I learned a lot there”

Fer collected 90 appearances at Swansea and was captain of the squad in the 2018/19 season. Despite being a popular figure at Swansea, he had a tough start. The first two games of the season, Fer found himself on the bench and had to make the most of coming on as a sub.

“We played Tottenham first and I came on and I played all right. I came on for 15 minutes. Then we played Arsenal away and we won 2-1.”

Fer thought his performances as a sub in those two games had earnt himself a start in the next game against Norwich City, a former team of his. However, this was not the case and he found himself on the bench again. It was fair to say Fer did not approve of that decision.

“I was just thinking ‘we just won at Arsenal away and now you’re putting me on the bench for Norwich at home. Come on. Are you taking the p***?”

It was another successful substitute appearance for Fer, he came on and assisted Gylfi Sigurdsson’s winner.  That game was the start of a successful career for Leroy Fer at Swansea City and fans were sad to see him go at the end of the 2018/19 season.
