Leeds United and Danny Rose – wild transfer claim made

Doncaster-born Danny Rose came up through the youth system at Leeds United after signing for the club in 2005 as a 14-year-old. He was later sold to Spurs, in late July 2007, from Leeds United’s Under-18s in a near-£1 million deal. Spurs is where he’s made his name, even if he is out of favour there at the moment and on loan at Newcastle United. Speaking to Football Insider, former Whites defender Alex Bruce makes a wild claim about Rose’s next move.

Since joining the North London side, Rose has gone on to make 210 appearances for Spurs (10 goals/29 assists) as well as amass 29 England caps, the last of which was back in mid-October 2019 in a 2-1 EURO qulifing defeat against the Czech Republic.

The 29-year-old left-back has been used intermittently by Tottenham in the opening part of the current Premier League campaign, falling out of favour of Jose Mourinho. A  January 30 move to Newcastle United on a half-season loan has seen him feature in all the Magpies six games before the COVID-19 pandemic caused society and football to be shut down.

Speaking to Football Insider, Bruce says that the temporary move to Newcastle has a latent, hidden meaning that points towards his next transfer move when he leaves Spurs. That is more rapidly looking likely to be this summer and football giants Paris Saint-Germain are said to be interested in landing him for their star-studded line-up.

Not so, according to Bruce who has his own theories on this temporary move to the Toon. Hinting that a move to Tyneside was to be closer to his family, Bruce dismisses the PSG links for a summer deal. When questioned on this, Bruce said: “I think one of the main reasons Danny Rose wanted to head back up to Newcastle was to be closer to his family in Leeds.”

In what is tantamount to linking the Spurs star wit ha move back to Elland Road, Bruce continues by saying: “I think it would kind of defeat the object him moving over to Paris, wouldn’t it? We’ll have to watch this space with that one.”

A view from The72 – Rose, PSG and Leeds

Cue X-Files music.

I’m not sure that I can trust the logic or train of thought from Alex Bruce on this one. It takes a leap of faith to go from ‘moving on loan to Newcastle’ to ‘rejecting PSG to sign for Leeds United to be closer to family’. Even Mulder and Scully would be hard-pressed to fathom that one out.

Look, Leeds United are a side on the up and, as such, will be a bigger draw to players like Danny Rose when they go looking for players should they gain promotion to the Premier League. Man, PSG though is in a league and more above the Whites. Champions League guaranteed versus Premier League and likely struggle?

I know ‘blood is thicker than water’ and that ‘family is family’ but it’s hard to see why Rose would give up the chance to play his football for such a prestigious outfit as Les Parisiens at a time in his career when he could command a much heftier wage than Leeds could afford to pay him.
