Leeds United defensive duo could leave once their contracts expire

Leeds United defensive duo Barry Douglas and Gaetano Berardi could be set to leave the club once their current contracts expire according to Leeds Live.

Both players have only played bit-part roles in the Whites’ push for promotion this season due to injuries and loss of form.

Douglas suffered an injury at the end of the last campaign and has been blighted by niggles this season too and even when he has been fit, the performances of Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski have kept him out of the side.

Berardi has also failed to make an important impact this season with the formidable central defensive partnership of Ben White and Liam Cooper keeping him out of the side.

The Swiss international has stepped up when Cooper has suffered injuries this season but not enough to displace him once the club captain has been fit enough to return.

On Douglas, it is claimed: “The transfer of the summer in 2018 after his cut-price exit from champions Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it just hasn’t happened for the Scot at Elland Road.”

“Injuries have crippled his ability to gather any momentum and since he arrived Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski have each muscled in on his turf. Hard to see him remaining beyond the end of his current deal in 2021.”

With Berardi it is believed: “The writing is already on the wall for the popular Swiss. Berardi was conspicuous by his absence from the raft of contract extensions last autumn. At 31, with promotion possibly looming, his time may be done in West Yorkshire when his deal expires at the end of 19/20.”

Although both Douglas and Berardi have been important at stages in their Leeds United careers, should they win promotion to the Premier League, it may well be time to consider more quality additions in defence.
