Kevin Phillips believes there is ‘nothing in it’ with West Brom and Leeds United vying for promotion

Former England international striker Kevin Phillips has claimed that there is ‘nothing in it’ in an interview with Birmingham Live with both West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United both vying for promotion this season.

Leeds moved one point clear at the top of the Championship table as they beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 whilst West Brom slipped up and could only draw 0-0 with Swansea City.

Phillips believes that the Baggies’ extra firepower could be crucial during the closing stages of the campaign and this could give them the edge over their rivals.

Albion have scored eight more goals than Leeds this season but have conceded seven more goals in the same period but the former West Brom striker admits there is little to choose between the two sides.

“I don’t put a lot between them, I have watched both play a lot this season and they have both had sticky patches,” he said. “Fortunately for Leeds when they were going through that spell my answer was ‘They are going through it at a time when they can still recover because there is plenty of games left’.”

“I would be worrying if they were going through that spell now with nine games left. I think they have come through that really well. They have got a good squad – no doubt about that and I think it will go all the way between them and the Baggies – right the way to the end.”

“When I look player for player there is not a lot in it, if anything you would have to say West Brom have got more of a threat going forward in terms of goals, with the players they have got. But Leeds they grind out results and get results so for me there’s not a lot in it.”

Phillips is correct in his assessment of the promotion race and it should go right down to the wire between the current top two in the Championship as to who will be crowned champions.
