Leeds United Augustin cature could be end of domestic striker chase – opinion

Leeds United admitted that they were in the market for three signings. Two of those have arrived in the shape of Elia Caprile and Ian Poveda with Jean-Kevin Augustin reported to be the third man in at the club according to stories breaking overnight from L’Equipe.

Now France’s premier football publication L’Equipe has said that the lure of Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United has proven too much for Paris-born Agustin who they [L’Equipe] say “should join in the coming hours the English club.”

Currently, on loan at Monaco, Augustin has featured in 13 games (10 in Ligue 1) for the French outfit this season since his arrival, getting on the scoresheet in the Coupe de la Ligue game against Marseille. Of his 10 Ligue 1 games, the young striker has only started in two of those appearances.

There is a said to be mutual respect between Leeds jefe Marcelo Bielsa and striker Augustin that is adding extra fuel to the fire of the Red Bull Leipzig youngster becoming a Leeds United player very shortly. If/When he does arrive on these shores, it will be on the loan-to-buy deal terms that are becoming a more regularly popular way of structuring transfers.

Yet, his supposedly impending arrival will likely mean one big thing for Leeds fans to consider regarding the transfer window and this is something that is also the opinion of Atletic writer Phil Hay (tweet – below). For Leeds United, a capture of the exciting and talented Augustin means the shutting up of transfer shutters for the Whites.

As Hay indicates, with the EFL’s ‘Profit and Sustainability’ regulations lurking in the background, clubs are very wary of over-reaching themselves financially. By doing this, a club finds itself at the mercy of the EFL who are beginning to bare their teeth and hit clubs with charges and punishments. These include transfer bans and/or points deductions – something that would hit a club hard.

Whichever way one looks at the situation of Jean-Kevin Augustin’s arrival at Elland Road, it would be an arrival that cuts out all talk of the Whites being involved in deals for the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Che Adams and Andre Gray. How Leeds United fans will likely take that remains to be seen.
