Marcelo Bielsa reacts as Leeds United salvage late point vs Preston

Speaking to Leeds United’s official club website, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has said that the Whites should have equalised sooner than they did, after Stuart Dallas’ 89th-minute goal saw them salvage a point on Boxing Day.

Leeds United’s Boxing Day tie with fellow promotion hopefuls Preston North End finished in a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. Alan Browne put Alex Neil’s side ahead 22 minutes in and it took an 89th-minute deflected strike from Stuart Dallas to level the scores and secure a point for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

It was Leeds who dominated possession, having 70% of the ball and five more shots than Preston, managing 17 attempts with only four hitting the target. Now, Bielsa has reflected on the game, saying that after a strong start from Preston, it was his side who dominated the game. Bielsa said:

“Preston controlled the match in the first 20 minutes. From there, for the rest of the game, the next 75 minutes, it was Leeds who controlled the match.

“We should have drawn level in the match before we did and even after when we draw level at the end, after we did this, we could have scored one more goal, we had one more chance. We have to make difference between the first 20 minutes and the other 75 minutes.

“The Preston chances had two characteristics, the first three or four chances, before they scored, were linked with our mistakes in playing out. It’s fair to recognise they forced our mistakes, but we could have avoided this.

“Preston’s goal was special because it was the first time in those 20 minutes where we built a very dangerous chance, but we couldn’t finish this chance. The danger of this chance was the first time we broke the pressure of Preston, we had superiority in the attack and we lost the ball in this situation in an unexpected way. What was dangerous for them became a goal against us.”
