Leeds United boss confirms star defender will replace key midfielder

Leeds United manager Marco Bielsa has confirmed that star defender Ben White will replace the suspended midfielder Kalvin Phillips against Huddersfield Town.

As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Bielsa said that White would be moved further forward into a defensive midfield position.

Due to the injuries to Adam Forshaw and Jamie Shackleton who could have been other alternatives to replace Phillips, Bielsa has instead opted for White who is renowned for his composure in possession.

“For a long time we’ve been working with White in this position,” Bielsa revealed. “He is going to play in that role. Of course it’s a new position for him. He has the skills to play there but he’s not used to it. We’ve been working with White for a long time.”

However, with arguably their most influential player this season being moved out of position this now belies the question of who will fill in for White in central defence.

When quizzed on this in his pre-match press conference, Bielsa said: “We’re lacking three players in this part of the team but we think we’re in good condition to resolve this.”

The most likely candidate to replace White is Swiss International Gaetano Berardi, who filled in as a central defender when Liam Cooper was injured and is well experienced in that position.

Leeds are currently suffering with injuries and the loss of Phillips to suspension could be a huge blow with White having been instrumental at the heart of defence.
