West Brom goalkeeper explains the reason behind success this season

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has explained the reason behind the league leaders’ success this season as reported by the Express & Star.

Albion have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six away games and Johnstone has been an important part of the team, making a number of vital saves in that run and he has paid credit to the communication he has with his teammates.

In many of their games this campaign, the Baggies have tended to dominate possession and with Johnstone being kept quiet between the sticks he explained how it can be difficult to keep switched on at times.

“It can be tough. If you look at it, there are times when I don’t have a lot to do in games. But then you look at the stats, and I’m up there with the most saves in the league.”

“For me, it’s important to keep talking to the defenders and keep talking to the team. Communication is really important. By talking and telling other people to switch on, that switches me on. It’s little things like that.”

West Brom ran out with a 1-0 victory over Preston North End on Monday evening following up a 4-1 success over Bristol City at the Hawthorns and the 26-year-old shot stopper admits the Baggies won’t win handsomely every week and will need to grind out results.

“In this league, you can’t go out and beat everyone three or four nil – it’s tough,” he continued. No matter how good a team we are, sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up, you have to do the dirty work.”

“Against Preston, Nathan Ferguson has blocked one on the line. I’ve made a save. And then we go on and win the game. It probably feels better that way, that we really had to dig in to get the three points.”

Johnstone has been in fine form this season for West Brom and his form will be important if they are to continue their impressive vein of form.
