Minnesota United make big-money swoop for Reading goalkeeper

Minnesota United have made an offer for Reading goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

The Italian stop stopper spent last season on loan with the Major League Soccer side and they now want to sign him on a permanent basis, according to The Athletic journalist Jeff Reuter on Twitter.

The offer that Minnesota have tabled would make Mannone the highest paid goalkeeper in the MLS for the 2020 season.

His contract with Championship side Reading expires at the end of the season meaning they are open to selling him this winter. He has fallen down the pecking order at the Madejski Stadium.

There is believed to be interest from fellow second tier sides as well as clubs in Italy for his services. However, Minnesota are hoping to lure him back to America where he won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year last term.

The keeper started his career in his native country with Atalanta but was snapped up by Arsenal as a youngster in 2005. Mannone went onto play 23 times for the Gunners’ first-team during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

He also gained plenty of experience out on loan at Barnsley and Hull City. Sunderland moved for him in 2013 and he spent four seasons at the Stadium of Light.

Reading came calling for Mannone in July 2017 and signed him for around £2 million. He was initially their first choice goalkeeper but has since lost his place.

He played 34 times on loan for Minnesota in their past season and could be on his way back there now.
