West Brom player ratings following 4-1 victory over Bristol City

West Bromwich Albion recorded an impressive 4-1 victory over Bristol City on Wednesday evening at the Hawthorns as they returned to the top of the Championship table.

There were a whole host of standout performers for the Baggies and here we take a look at the player ratings from the game:

SAM JOHNSTONE – 7

Had very little to do in the first half, just simply watched the delightful football from his teammates. Couple of chances to deal with in the second half but did well. Nothing he could do about the goal.

KIERAN GIBBS – 7

Offers a real outlet out wide with his natural left foot and always willing to take on his opposite number. Scored the first goal via a deflection following a beautiful assist from Diangana.

KYLE BARTLEY – 9

Has reinvented himself under Slaven Bilic and once again bossed the defence. Never really gave Bristol City’s front players a chance and looked confident and kept things simple.

SEMI AJAYI – 9

His pace and athleticism in defence was missed on Saturday and this evident here. Strode forward on occasions and showed his vision of passing. Always up for the physical battle, a steal of a signing.

NATHAN FERGUSON – 7

Returned from suspension in place of Conor Townsend and looked comfortable. Added pace to the backline and didn’t have too many concerns to deal with. Almost scored an own goal when his hacked clearance deflected off Bartley but fell kindly for Johnstone.

ROMAINE SAWYERS – 8

Back in midfield following his one match ban and looked as though he had never been away. Didn’t do anything wholly spectacular but his calmness and composure in possession was clear to see.

JAKE LIVERMORE – 7

Tended to push forward more here and had a couple of half chances to get himself on the scoresheet. Bossed proceedings against a lively Bristol City side.

GRADY DIANGANA – 8

How the West Brom supporters will wish they could buy the winger in the summer but it looks a non-starter. Produced a fabulous assist for Gibbs and ran tirelessly showcasing his tricks and the City defence simply couldn’t handle him.

MATT PHILLIPS – 7

Was much better here than against Sheffield Wednesday. Looked more up for the fight and although his set piece deliveries require some work, his crosses from open play were top draw.

MATHEUS PEREIRA – 9

Running out of superlatives for the Brazilian. On top form once again playing neat intricate passes with Diangana and Phillips. The free kick was a sight to behold, it looked too close to goal to bring the ball up and over the ball but not for Pereira, magnificent performance.

HAL ROBSON-KANU – 9

Another player who has become undroppable under Slaven Bilic. Held the ball up well, harried the defenders and scored a deserved goal following a lovely cross from Phillips. Seems to have a good understand with those around him.

SUBS:

DARNELL FURLONG – 7

Came on for the tiring Kieran Gibbs and slotted into the right-back role with Ferguson moving over to the left. Helped his teammates see out the victory.

KYLE EDWARDS – 6

Made some incisive runs towards goal and also helped out defensively in the closing stages.

CHARLIE AUSTIN – 7

Although he has been dropped to the bench, he has made an impact in the last two games he has been introduced. Scored another goal to add comprehension to the scoreline.
