Middlesbrough’s 10 game winless streak came to an end at The Riverside on Wednesday evening, as they beat bottom of the league Barnsley 1-0.
The Middlesbrough winner came courtesy of striker Ashley Fletcher, who rounded the keeper and slotted home after tenacious work from youngster Marcus Tavernier down the left.
The goal is Fletcher’s second in as many games, and his third of the season in total. He will be hoping to add to his tally against high flying Leeds United in their next fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to Teesside Live, the forward stated that the win against the Tykes in midweek will give them the boost they need, and it could be a ‘turning point’ in their season.
“This has to give us the confidence to be a turning point” he said.
“We’ll go into the Leeds game full of confidence.”
Leeds sit second in the Championship standings and are unbeaten in seven. Middlesbrough are at the opposite end of table however in 20th position, but they are now unbeaten in three games after a couple of 2-2 draws with Queens Park Rangers and Hull City before their 1-0 win on Wednesday.
Fletcher also gave his take on the win, claiming that it was a battle out on the pitch. It was a must win for both teams at The Riverside, and the forward believes the victory will put them in good stead heading into the game at Elland Road at the weekend.
“It was tough, I’m not going to lie. The boys really had to dig deep at times, but this will give us confidence.”
