Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw with Hull was full of promise, and they face a Barnsley side who are rooted to the bottom of the table on Wednesday night.
Here is the predicted Middlesbrough XI to play Barnsley:
GK – Darren Randolph
Randolph is “50/50” according to Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate. But if there’s a chance he could play in such an important game, he will.
RWB – Anfernee Dijksteel
Dijksteel was brought into the side against Hull and performed well in both defence and attack.
RCB – Jonny Howson
The once-attacking midfielder was deployed in the centre of defence in his most recent outing against Hull, and he impressed against the Tigers. He may continue in this position on Wednesday.
CB – Dani Ayala
Ayala has been one of Boro’s standout performers this season, and will play from the off.
LCB – Dael Fry
The youngster has been used on his less-favoured left side of the centre of defence and has failed to live up to expectations. But he will be vital if Boro are to stay up.
LWB – Hayden Coulson
Coulson should be preferred to Marc Bola at left wing-back after Marvin Johnson’s sending off against Hull.
LCM – Lewis Wing
After being one of Middlesbrough’s best players last year he hasn’t hit the heights this campaign. However, his quality on the ball will be needed tonight.
RCM – Paddy McNair
As well as Ayala, McNair has been one of Boro’s best performers.
CAM – Marcus Tavernier
Tavernier’s goal against Hull will have done him the world of good, and he will presumably start against Barnsley.
ST – Britt Assombalonga
The forward is on form at the moment, having scored two and assisted one in his last two games.
ST – Ashley Fletcher
Similarly to Tavernier, Fletcher’s goal on Sunday will fill him with a lot more confidence going into the game against the Tykes on Wednesday evening.
