Sheffield Wednesday boss discusses the future of Owls forward

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has insisted that forward Fernando Forestieri will get game time, as transfer speculation continues with the window coming up.

Fernando Forestieri has found his involvement limited so far this season, making just eight appearances so far in all competitions, with seven of those coming off the bench. In the process, he has notched one goal and one assist.

He has been behind the likes of Steven Fletcher and Atdhe Nuhiu in the pecking order, with Sam Winnall also getting in the matchday squads ahead of him on occasions. With the transfer window coming up, it has lead to speculation amongst fans that he could be heading for the exit door, but manager Garry Monk has said that Forestieri still has his part to play.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Monk said:

“He is part of the squad. I am more than aware of his quality and he will have his chances and he will play his games but there are also other players doing very, very well.

“When you analyse the last four games, the overall picture is that a lot those players are playing very, very well and doing a good job. You have to make decisions as you go along and you try and put the best team on the pitch.

“It is about focusing those players on who I think can win that game. Of course, Fernando will contribute. I am with the players every day and see how they train and play and where they are mentally. I try and factor in all that as well as the perception of a player.

“Fernando will play. He will get his minutes but I also think there are a lot of other players performing well and in a position to start games. You have to consider a lot of things when you are selecting teams.”
