Manchester United legend joins West Brom coaching staff

Manchester United legend Darren Fletcher has ‘informally’ agreed to become part of the West Bromwich Albion coaching staff as confirmed on their official website.

Fletcher was at West Brom from February 2015 when he signed on a free transfer and went on to make 91 appearances in a two-and-a-half-year spell before signing for Stoke City in June 2017.

The Scottish international is most renowned for playing for Manchester United from 2003 until 2015 although he also spent his youth career with the Red Devils. He made in excess of 200 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson and gained a wealth of experience at the top level.

West Brom’s Sporting and Technical Director Luke Dowling invited Fletcher to join their coaching team and the Scot admitted it was an easy decision.

“It’s a great opportunity,” says Darren. “I’m working towards my A licence and when the invitation came from Luke to do some work back at Albion it was a simple decision.”

“I love coming back to the Club – it’s a special place for me and the moment you walk back through the doors it’s like being with your family again. Coaching is definitely something that interests me and this is a great opportunity to add to my experience.”

Dowling also expressed his delight at acquiring Fletcher in a coaching capacity. “We’ve stayed in touch with Darren since the summer and it was not a difficult decision to open our doors to him as he considers a career in coaching.”

“He will get involved in sessions and our young players should savour every minute they can spend being coached by someone of Darren’s experience and stature in the game. It’s a very informal agreement at the moment and we will just enjoy having Fletch back in the building and working with our young players.”

Fletcher joins James Morrison in joining the West Brom coaching set up in recent months.
