Derby defender rues missing out on loan move

Derby County’s Max Lowe has revealed how he wished he had gone out on loan earlier in his career after a spell at Aberdeen did wonders for his development as a player.

Speaking to RamsTV, the 22-year-old took a look back at his brief career and spoke about crucial decisions he had to make when it came to staying at Pride Park or joining another club on loan.

The young left-back was all ready to prove he was worthy of a first-team place at the start of last season but a rocky start led to him being sent out on loan to SPL side Aberdeen by Frank Lampard.

And it was a move that proved dividends with Lowe returning just months later in January as a “new player”, according to Derby County.

Lowe said: “Looking back, I wish I went out on loan two years before when I was 18 instead of 21. I feel like loans for young lads is vital to get games under their belts and learn about footballing experience.

“Up in Scotland, it’s rough and ready. I had to be prepared and I feel like I’ve brought a bit back with me. The big games against Rangers and Celtic got me prepared to play against the likes of Leeds away and West Brom.”

Lowe featured more prominently upon his return last season and is now an established part of Phillip Cocu’s starting XI.

The academy star has started 11 games so far this season and has the joint highest tackles per game rate of any player at the club alongside Graeme Shinnie.
