West Brom player ratings following Sheffield Wednesday clash

West Bromwich Albion got the better of Sheffield Wednesday in a tight encounter at the Hawthorns as they ran out with a 2-1 victory thanks to a late Charlie Austin penalty.

The Baggies had gone in front thanks to a lovely finish from Hal Robson-Kanu following an exquisite through ball from Matheus Pereira. Wednesday then won a second half penalty following a mistake from Filip Krovinovic to level up the scores, only for Westwood to hack down Pereira to allow Austin to cooly slot home from the penalty spot.

Here we take a look at the West Brom player ratings from the game:

SAM JOHNSTONE – 7

The keeper is getting better with each and every game he plays. Looking much more solid and commanding of his area and made some good stops here although they were routine.

DARNELL FURLONG – 7

Once again had to curb his attacking instincts and dealt with the lively Kadeem Harris well. Also sent in some lovely crosses, one of which was almost met by Robson-Kanu.

AHMED HEGAZI – 5

The Egyptian came in for his first start of the season as Semi Ajayi was pushed into midfield but he looked a little rusty. Made some basic errors although he did tend to atone for them, unfair to be too harsh considering his lack of game time.

KYLE BARTLEY – 8

Simply looks a completely different player under Slaven Bilic. Commanding in the air and tough in the tackle. Wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Jake Livermore and put in a captain’s display.

CONOR TOWNSEND – 6

The full-back had performed well against Stoke City and Hull City in place of the suspended Nathan Ferguson and even kept Kieran Gibbs on the bench for this game. However, he played some sloppy balls and lost possession too often, could find himself back amongst the substitutes for the Bristol City game.

SEMI AJAYI – 7

Had a change of position and was always going to find it tough to replace Livermore but Ajayi did well. Provided good protection for the defence and offered height to the midfield, winning a number of aerial battles.

FILIP KROVINOVIC – 5

Not a great game for the Croatian. Played some neat passes in the first half but made a mistake in the second half and gave away the penalty. Filling in for Romaine Sawyers was always going to be difficult but Bilic will surely bring back the pass master for the next game.

MATT PHILLIPS – 6

As always, full of endeavour and running but lacked end product on a few occasions. His set piece deliveries were also not quite as good as they usually are. Struggled to really make an impact on the game.

MATHEUS PEREIRA – 8

Does the Brazilian ever not play well? Has everything you want from a player in the number ten role. Provided a sublime through ball for Robson-Kanu that someone of the calibre of Kevin De Bruyne would have been proud of. Also won the penalty, another brilliant display.

GRADY DIANGANA – 7

Received some rough treatment from the Sheffield Wednesday players with opposition beginning to realise the quality of the winger. Played in some great crosses and his trickery was always a problem for the Wednesday defence.

HAL ROBSON-KANU – 8

Goodness knows where Robson-Kanu has gone because he is another player who has reinvented himself in recent weeks under Bilic. Held the ball up well, was a menace to the Wednesday defence and finished off his performance with a lovely goal.

SUBS:

CHARLIE AUSTIN – 7

His introduction had the desired impact as he scored the winning penalty. Also hit the post with a header, great cameo.

GARETH BARRY – 7

38-years-old but you wouldn’t have guessed. Hasn’t played since March due to a knee injury but he was tidy in possession and bossed the midfield.

CHRIS BRUNT – 6

When he was introduced, the midfield partnership had a combined age of over 70-years-old but the experienced veteran was just as good in possession as Barry.
