Reading could lose loan man in January with Premier League club considering recall

The Liverpool Echo has reported that Everton manager Marco Silva and Under-23s boss David Unsworth have spoken with Marcel Brands over the goalkeeper Joao Virginia’s loan spell with Championship side Reading.

Everton youngster Joao Virginia is currently on loan with Championship side Reading, and having started the season in between the sticks for Jose Gomes’ side, he has since found himself out of favour.

He started the first two games but has not played a Championship game since, conceding five goals in that time. Having been initially dropped to the bench, Virginia has since dropped out of the matchday squad completely, prompting Everton to consider his future at Reading.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo regarding Virginia’s situation at Reading, Under-23s boss Unsworth said:

“Marcel and I and Marco have spoken. He’s having a tough time at the moment and we have discussed it. I’m not really sure the final decision on what is going to happen but all I know is that he’s an absolute top, top young goalkeeper.

“He’s had a bad loan, it happens. Look what happened to Beni last year. We all know Beni’s qualities. It can happen. I’m sure he will be a better person for it when he comes back, whenever he comes back.

“A couple of times. Reading say he’s been training well, he’s just been unlucky. You get that. You get good loans, you get bad loans and as much as it’s been not a great and productive loan in terms of him playing I’m sure he will have learned a lot about himself. It will stand him in good stead. He’s a kid in terms of goalkeeping and any experience will help him in the future.”
