Nigel Adkins reveals ‘toxic environment’ at Hull City and how he did not want to leave club

Former Hull City boss Nigel Adkins has opened up about his time at the club and how he did not want to leave the Tigers.

Adkins left the Championship side after opting not to renew his expiring contract in June 2019.

He said at the time that his and the club’s futures were “not aligned” and he has now revealed in more depth to Sky Sports about his decision to leave the Tigers.

He said: “It was difficult for me because I didn’t want to leave. I really enjoyed my time at Hull City and there were many challenges.

”Sometimes it was frustrating. We went there when they had just been relegated from the Premier League. Things were just not quite right and there were a lot of injuries. The players were great for us though, and the club and the staff.

”There was a toxic environment at the club with the ownership and there were a lot of protests. The club was on a downward spiral and we managed to avoid that. We had a good structure about ourselves.

I’d like to think the players bought into what we were doing on the training ground and there was a good environment.”

Adkins, who has previously managed the likes of Scunthorpe United and Southampton, also admitted he was left frustrated the most during the summer of 2018 but praised his staff for helping to turn around the club’s fortunes.

He added: “The frustrations that came for me were during the summer. We started pre-season with an array of academy players.

“We were second bottom this time last season, though. We got off to a slow start and we grew into it and did really well.”
