“I’ll tell them this was God” – Leeds United fans respond to William Hill tweet

Internet memes come and go with fleeting regularity. What is the current zeitgeist soon becomes tomorrow’s chip wrapping in the fluid world of online mimicry.

The current meme doing the rounds rests on the ‘I’ll tell my grandkids this was…’ phrase. In the ethereal world that is the Internet, this has gained traction and many examples are being put forward by many waggish Twitter users.

However, one that has resounded deeply with some Leeds United fans is this one from betting giants William Hill:

For Leeds United fans, there is little that is needed to get them waxing lyrically about the skills and poise of Pablo Herandez. Whenever the mercurial Spaniard is mentioned, in even the faintest of breaths, eyes mist over and stutters break out in grown men.

Ever since his arrival on an initial loan deal from Qatari side Al Arabi in August 2016, the right-sided attacker has captured the hearts and minds of Leeds United fans. In his first season with the Whites, Hernandez featured in 35 games, scoring six goals and providing eight assists. That was a decent return for Hernandez, but he has kicked on since then.

The following season, the 2017/18 campaign, the Spaniard notched seven goals and provided nine assists in a league campaign that displayed consistency from his first one as a White. That consistency was improved upon last season, his first under Marcelo Bielsa, with him scoring 12 goals and laying on 12 assists in 39 Championship appearances. That return was enough to win him his second successive Player of the Year award – the first time a player achieved this in the history of Leeds United.

Yes, it is factual enough to state that all Leeds United fans have a degree of love for Pablo Hernandez. Some of this can be seen in the replies that William Hill has received to the above tweet.
