Hull City defender commits future to the club

Hull City centre-back Jordy de Wijs has committed his immediate future to the club and admitted he feels “very happy” at the Tigers.

The Dutchman suffered a huge knock to his form and confidence last season but has excelled this campaign under boss Grant McCann.

He has now cemented himself as a regular starter in Hull’s back line and hopes staying at the club will allow him to develop as a player.

In an interview with the club’s official website the 24-year-old, who moved to Hull from PSV Eindhoven last year, said: “It’s a big club to develop yourself and they’ve given me the opportunity to play in English football.

“I want to keep improving, to keep playing for Hull City. I feel lucky. I am at the right club.

“I’m playing with more confidence and I know what I can expect. I know the team, I know the players and I feel in the right place.

“I think this is a great club to be at in order to develop yourself and improve. I am very happy here and, as long as I feel happy, I can perform.”

So far this season, de Wijs has started all but one of Hull’s fixtures in the Sky Bet Championship with the club currently 12th in the league and pushing for the play-offs.

Ahead of their game against struggling Middlesbrough on Sunday, de Wijs said: “Of course we want to be higher in the league but we’re playing some great football and getting some good results.

“We just need to keep building on that and I’m sure that we will get some good results.

“We are close but we are not up there. And that’s not good enough. We want to be in the top six, then we can be happy.

“The game against West Brom, you could see they didn’t create that many chances but they won the game.

“We need to start punishing teams and take our chances. As soon as we do that we can climb the table.

“The next month is a good test for us, how mentally strong we are. Last year we picked up a lot of points at this time so hopefully, we can do it again.

“We won a lot of games at this stage of last season and we’re confident that we have a good squad. Everyone is fit and we’re ready for the challenge. It’s a very strong group.”
