Middlesbrough’s Jonny Howson has revealed how he went through a “real tough time” under Garry Monk during his initial arrival at the Riverside.
The former Leeds United man signed for Boro from Norwich City in the summer of 2017. He has played as a midfielder for most of his career but over the course of the last two seasons he has established himself as a confident right-back for the north-east club.
It has been a torrid season for Howson and his colleagues at Boro with Jonathan Woodgate’s side embroiled in an unexpected relegation battle after 16 games.
However, in an interview with BBC Tees Sport which has been shared in the Hartlepool Mail, Howson has revealed the struggles he faced in trying to prove himself under then manager Garry Monk.
The 31-year-old said: “There are certainly moments when you start to doubt yourself that’s nothing new.
“I must admit that’s probably the first time in my career that I probably thought I’m going through a real tough time from a personal point of view in regards to form.
“I believe that was the case of it was something new to me, I’m not saying I’ve never had a bad game but it was going on for quite a while and it wasn’t clicking.
“Certainly coming through that, that lack of confidence, it makes you stronger as well.”
